Bucket Line Drill
To work on your player’s fielding skills and do some conditioning
Plastic Balls, Safety Balls or Baseballs
This is a great way to get a lot of fielding reps for players.
Set up a cone about 12 meters away from a bucket full of balls (you can adjust based on the size of the players). Have the players line up single file behind the cone. Have a coach set up about midway between the cone and the bucket and off to the side (maybe about 1,5 meter or so).
The coach at the bucket will begin rolling balls and the players will charge and field the ball then run around the coach who is off to the side and finally drop the ball in the bucket. They will then sprint to the back of the player line at the cone and be ready to do it again.
Have players charge the ball and get in a good position to field it. You can vary the speed and angle at which the ball is thrown. You can also switch from ground balls to short pop ups to line drives based on the sill level of your players. I like to make it challenging by having the players try to get x amount of balls in a row before we switch to the pop flies. I will count up as the plays are made and make it a little more challenging as they get close to the target number.
This adds a little pressure to the players making the play when you get close to the end.
